Tube Car Panel Advertising
20 minutes. That is the average tube journey. No ad-blockers. No skip button. Just your ad, a metre from someone's face, while they have absolutely nothing else to do. Passengers read car panel ads 3 to 4 times per trip. QR codes actually get scanned. And it starts from £150 per panel for 2 weeks. Honestly, it is one of the cheapest ways to get extended attention from a London audience.

Why Car Panels Work So Well
The format has been around for over a century. It still works because the fundamentals have not changed.
People get on a train and sit down. For the next 20 minutes they are yours. No channel switching. No scrolling to the next post. The carriage is a closed environment and your ad sits directly above the seats at eye level. Even with smartphones, TfL research shows most passengers still engage with in-carriage ads. Boredom is a powerful driver of attention.
This is the stat that matters. Passengers do not just glance at your ad once. Their eyes drift back 3 to 4 times during a single journey because there genuinely is not much else to look at in a tube carriage. Every time they look up from their phone, there you are again. That repeated exposure in a single trip drives recall numbers that digital campaigns struggle to match.
Your ad is less than a metre from the passenger. That proximity changes everything. You can include detailed copy, smaller text, QR codes, discount codes, website URLs. People have time and closeness to actually read and act. QR codes on car panels generate 3x the scan rate compared to bus shelter or roadside formats. This is the one outdoor format where direct response genuinely works.
A Straight Take on the Numbers
A 2024 TfL study found 68% of tube passengers recalled seeing in-carriage ads during their most recent journey. 42% said they had taken action after seeing a tube ad in the past month. Those are not theoretical impressions. Those are real people who remember your brand and did something about it.
The reality is that car panels will not work for every product. If your message needs audio or video, you want digital screens instead. If you need massive one-second impact, platform posters or cross-track formats are better. But if you want sustained attention, close-up readability, and a format where people actually scan QR codes, car panels are hard to beat. And at £150 per panel, the entry cost is lower than almost any other tube format.
In-Carriage Formats
Four ways to get inside the carriage. Pick the one that matches your budget and how much creative space you need.
Car Panels
From £150 / 2 weeks
318mm x 660mm (landscape)
The standard format. Landscape panels above the seats on both sides of the carriage. Eye-level for standing passengers, directly overhead for seated ones. This is what most brands book. It gives you enough space for a strong visual, a headline, body copy, and a QR code. Works for everything from brand awareness to direct response. The workhorse of in-train advertising.
Tube Cards
From £100 / 2 weeks
267mm x 330mm
Smaller strips along the ceiling line between the car panels and the roof. Cheapest in-carriage format. Best for simple, punchy messages. App download with a QR code. A single bold headline. An event date. Do not try to cram a car panel message into a tube card. Keep it simple and they work well. Often booked as an add-on to a car panel campaign for extra frequency.
Digital Car Panels
From £500 / 2 weeks
HD digital screens
Available on the Elizabeth line and being rolled out on other lines as trains get upgraded. Animated content, video loops, dynamic messaging. No print costs. You can swap creatives mid-campaign without reprinting anything. Still quite limited in terms of which lines have them, but the Elizabeth line screens are excellent quality and the audience skews business and affluent.
Full Car Wraps
POA (£15,000+)
Entire carriage interior
Total takeover. Every surface inside the carriage carries your brand. Walls, ceilings, floors, panels. Passengers sit inside your advertisement for 20 minutes. Reserved for major launches and premium campaigns. Limited availability, 6+ weeks lead time, and a significant budget. But if you want to own a moment and create social media buzz, nothing else comes close. Talk to us early if this interests you.
Which Line Reaches Which Audience
Every tube line has a different passenger profile. Choosing the right lines is half the battle. Here is the cheat sheet we use internally.
Central Line
City Workers & East London
Runs through Liverpool Street, Bank, Oxford Circus, and Notting Hill Gate. Heavy City professional traffic during peaks. If you are targeting finance, legal, tech, or recruitment audiences, the Central line is a staple. Also picks up a strong residential audience from West London and the eastern suburbs.
Northern Line
The All-Rounder
Covers everything from affluent Hampstead to bustling Camden, through the City and the West End, down to south London. One of the busiest and most diverse lines. If you are not sure which line to pick and want broad reach, the Northern line is usually our first recommendation. Massive passenger volumes and a genuinely mixed audience.
Jubilee Line
Canary Wharf & Finance
The Canary Wharf express. Connects Bond Street and Baker Street to London's Docklands financial district. Passenger profile skews noticeably towards higher earners, especially during peaks when the Canary Wharf commuters dominate. Ideal for fintech, professional services, luxury, and B2B campaigns targeting people with purchasing authority.
Piccadilly Line
Tourists & West London
Heathrow Airport to Covent Garden via Knightsbridge and Piccadilly Circus. Carries more international tourists than any other line thanks to the Heathrow connection. Perfect for tourism, hospitality, luxury retail, entertainment, and West End theatre. Also serves affluent residential areas around South Kensington and Earl's Court.
Victoria Line
Fast Commuters
Trains every 100 seconds at peak. Brixton to Walthamstow via Victoria, Oxford Circus, and Kings Cross. High frequency means massive passenger throughput. Diverse route covering south London, the West End, and northeast London. Good value for maximum impressions. The line does not cover the City directly, but the passenger volumes compensate.
Elizabeth Line
Business & Airport
London's newest line with modern carriages and digital ad screens. Heathrow and Reading to Shenfield and Abbey Wood via Paddington, Bond Street, Liverpool Street, and Canary Wharf. Business travellers, airport passengers, cross-London commuters. The train interiors are newer and less cluttered than older lines, so your ad stands out more.
District & Metropolitan
Suburban Families
Serve outer London and the commuter belt into Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire. High proportion of families and suburban professionals. Longer journey times mean even more dwell with your ad. Great for property, automotive, education, and lifestyle. Rates are lower than Zone 1 lines, so you get more panels for your money.
Bakerloo Line
West End & Budget Pick
Elephant & Castle through Waterloo and Oxford Circus to northwest London. Serves the West End theatre district. Older rolling stock means traditional panel positions are well established. Rates are lower than the busier lines, making this a cost-effective way to reach central London. Good for smaller budgets that still want Zone 1 presence.
Multi-Line Packages
Maximum London Reach
Want to cover the whole city? Multi-line packages put your panels across three or more lines for broad reach at a discounted per-panel rate. This is how the big brand awareness campaigns are run. Millions of impressions across every type of London audience. We build custom packages based on your target demographics and budget.

Making Your Car Panel Ads Actually Work
Car panels give you something rare in outdoor: time. Passengers are close, bored, and have minutes to read. Use that advantage. But still lead with something bold that grabs them from across the carriage.
“Our car panel campaign on the Central and Jubilee lines drove a 34% spike in website traffic. The QR code response was three times what we got from bus shelters. Monster Outdoor handled the whole thing. We just approved the artwork and watched the numbers come in.”
